A shortlist should survive being said out loud.

Sound-alike enrichment is provided by the free Datamuse API. Candidate names are sent only when you press the sound-check button. Household names and custom cues stay on your device.

Use the same test every time

Listen for practical differences.

A name does not need to be short, fashionable, or unusual. It needs to be comfortable for your household and distinct enough for the situations where you will use it.

01

Use an ordinary voice

Shouting can make every name sound sharp. Test each finalist at the volume you normally use indoors and across a yard.

02

Include familiar cues

Compare the name with come, stay, no, and the words your household actually uses. A possible overlap is a reason to listen carefully, not an automatic rejection.

03

Repeat the test tomorrow

Novelty affects first impressions. Keep two strong finalists and use each one for a day before treating the scorecard as final.

Before you use the result

What this tester can and cannot tell you.

Does the dog name tester cost anything?

No. The tester, browser speech playback, local comparison, and optional Datamuse sound check are free to use.

Are household names sent anywhere?

No. Household names, pet names, custom cues, ratings, and the comparison itself remain in browser storage on your device. Only a candidate dog name is sent to Datamuse when you choose to run the sound check.

Can this prove that a dog will learn a name?

No. The tool helps people compare pronunciation and possible sound conflicts. Learning still depends on consistent, positive use and the individual dog.

How many names should I compare?

Two or three finalists make the clearest comparison, although the tester accepts up to five. Use the same phrases and scoring standard for every name.
