How to choose from the K list
Start with five to eight names that differ in length and rhythm. Say each candidate in a greeting, a calm sentence, and a recall cue. Remove names that repeatedly become an unwanted nickname or sound too close to a person, pet, or cue already used in your home.
Check pronunciation and context before attaching a meaning to an unfamiliar name. A documented given name, a transparent word name, and a modern pet nickname are different kinds of choices. None predicts a dog’s personality.
Once you reach two or three finalists, use the same positive attention exercise for each. The goal is not to make the dog select a winner. It is to find the name your household can say clearly and consistently.
A name that feels comfortable at breakfast, on a walk, and at the veterinarian is more useful than one that works only as a clever introduction.
